Former chief PCB, Wapda seeks acquittal under NRO 2007

An accountability court has asked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to submit a reply till 10 November on an application forwarded by former chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from 1987 to 1992 and that of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Lieutenant General Zahid Ali Akbar (Retd).
He was seeking his acquittal from the reference under the 2007 National Reconciliation Ordinance. General Akbar is accused of corruption. The court was holding proceedings under Section 512 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in Akbar's absence and issued perpetual arrest warrants against him.
The court has already declared him a proclaimed offender. NAB accused Akbar of corruption in his tenure when he worked as a chairman of PCB, from 1987 to 1992 and Wapda The accused was charged with owing assets worth Rs 176 million in his name, his dependants and benamidars. Assets included 77 bank accounts in the names of his relatives and business concerns.
The accused made foreign remittances of $706,200 (Rs 32.4 million) between 1993 and 1998. The assets were found disproportionate to his sources of income and he could not reasonably account for them. He also maintained a standard of living beyond his sources of income.
