50,000 villages get electricity in five years

The present government has supplied electricity to 50,000 villages in the last five years, where as the previous governments had facilitated only 10,000 villages in their respective tenure. This was disclosed by the Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz while talking to Federal Minister for Petroleum Liaquat Ali Jatoi, who called on him at the PM House here on Saturday.
He said that the rising demand of the electricity in the rural areas had increased manifold due to rapid economic growth. Liaquat Jatoi briefed the prime minister about the new power generation projects and said that 775 MW of new projects for producing 775 MW of electricity had been completed by the private sector and several new projects in the private sector were underway to produce a total of 2,000 MW of electricity, which would yield $2 billion in the power sector.
He said that eleven new Hydle projects were being planned in the private sectors through PPIB which would yield an additional 2,500 MW to meet the set target of providing electricity at all levels, including industrial, domestic and agricultural across the country.
