Benazir condemns Aitzaz's arrest

Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto has condemned the arrest of Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and scores of PPP and democratic activists before the suspension of the Constitution and imposition of martial law.
In an unconstitutional move General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday held the Constitution in abeyance, sacked the judges of superior courts and gave himself powers to legislate.
Scores of Party activists were arrested from Gujrat, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Kot Momin, and Lahore while hundreds more have gone underground as police carrying arrest warrants are raiding their houses and chasing them. Barrister Aitzaz was among the first who were arrested. Malik Hamid Nawaz Senior Vice President of PPP District Sargodha along with some office bearers and the old father of the Party's information secretary in Gujrat have also been arrested. In a statement on Sunday, Benazir Bhutto called for the restoration of the Constitution and the holding of scheduled elections on time.
