Lawyers observe Black Day

14 Nov, 2007

The Lawyers' community observed a black day here on Tuesday, refusing to appear in courts. Most members of the Lahore High Court Bar Association remained away from the bar premises and never visited the bar rooms with police staying around for the last seven days in the bar premises, placing barricades at the main gates of the Lahore High Court.
Due to the threat of arrest most of the bar members who visited the bar came not wearing lawyers' uniform. Vice President LHCBA Fardoos Butt due to some reasons cancelled the bar meeting immediately after calling it on November 15. The police after meeting notice placed on bar notice board came in action and tried its best to arrest Butt. Police searched Fardoos Butt in every corner of the bar including committee rooms, toilets and canteens. But they failed as Fardoos had already left the premises before the police came into action. The police also raided her office but failed to arrest her.
Bar member Aftab Ahmed Bajwa who later also slipped from the bar to avoid his arrest informed the Business Recorder that he was trying to get the rest of the bar members bailed out but after announcement of bar meeting it was impossible for him.
He also claimed that the home secretary had issued his arrest orders. He said Fardoos should have never called the bar meeting before release of all bar members. He said courts were dismissing the cases, as lawyers had not received the cause list after Butt refused to receive the same from the court registrar.
