6.3M quake rocks Islamabad, northern areas

KARACHI : A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the federal capital and other northern areas of Pakistan on Monday.

Peshawar, Chitral, Dir, Gilgit, Rawalpindi, Swat, Mansehra, Muzaffarabad, Lahore, Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Batgram, Skardu and other areas were also jolted by the tremors.

According to the Meteorological Department, the tremors had their epicenter 214 kilometres from Islamabad, at a depth of 200 kilometers in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the mountainous region of the Hindu Kush.

The tremors were also felt in northern India and occupied Kashmir.

However, no loss of life or property had been reported yet.

It may be mentioned, in October 2005, a violent earthquake struck northern parts of Pakistan killing at least 73,000 people.
