WASHINGTON: A US clothing company has been under fire on social media for selling $425 jeans complete with "crackled, caked-on muddy coating".

The Nordstrom's website describes it "rugged, Americana workwear" and "hard-working action".

The filthy fashion statement isn't actually new -- the jeans have been for sale at Nordstrom as well as at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue for quite some time. But for some reason, the listing on Nordstrom's website caught the internet's attention on Tuesday and the inevitable Twitter firestorm ensued.

“You can achieve the same look for a lot less by rolling in your backyard or gardening," BBC quoted a commentator.

Fran Johnson said on twitter, “Nietzsche sees us as decadent when our moral system ignores the essential truths of life. Buying $425 jeans with fake mud from Nordstrom.”

On the other hand, the company says the jeans are made with muddy coating "that shows you're not afraid to get down and dirty".

But not everyone was dismissive of the new jeans.

"What's the beef about buying mud jeans?" one commentator on Twitter said.

"If someone can afford $400 for a pair of dirty jeans, so what? Go for it!"

Last month Nordstrom advertised another unusual pair of trousers in the form of with "knee windows" on its website - but for a far cheaper $95.
