Early election now

22 Nov, 2007

So, the general elections are going to be held much earlier than middle of February next year in the country. Early date for holding of the polls to constitute the new National and Provincial Assemblies has also been announced by President General Pervez Musharraf.
As announced general elections are now going to be held by January 8,2008 instead of on or by February 15 next year. This is indeed the most welcome announcement as the gap from now to the holding of the election has been further narrowed down.
This should satisfy the opposition parties and their leaders who have been clamouring quite loudly for sometime that the election should be held as early as possible.
Instead of raising objections of this and that sort, all political and religious parties and alliances in all fairness should start doing the spadework for the forthcoming election for securing as much seats as possible.
The contesting parties and alliances in fact are yet to frame their election manifestoes. Earlier they do it the better it would be for them to launch the electioneering in the right earnest after the schedule is announced by the Election Commission.
They should waste no more time in negative and hostile politicking and concentrate straight away on the coming polls to make maximum use of the time left at their disposal. The electorate are watching them very closely, they should remember this and start working on election manifestoes and finalising lists of their candidates for the National and Provincial Assemblies, if not already done.
