India to sign pacts on prisoners with Egypt and Cambodia

01 Dec, 2007

India will sign an extradition treaty with Egypt and a pact for an exchange of prisoners with Cambodia, a senior Indian minister said Friday.
The treaty with Egypt would provide a legal framework for extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals from that country, state-run Doordarshan television network reported quoting Information and Broadcasting Minister PR Dasmunshi.
India would also sign an agreement with Cambodia for the transfer of those sentenced by courts to their respective countries, Dasmunshi said. The decisions were approved by India's federal cabinet on Thursday, the minister said.
The treaty with Cambodia would allow prisoners of Indian origin in that country to serve the remaining part of their sentences in India. "The agreement would enable prisoners to be near their families and help in the process of their social rehabilitation," Dasmunshi said.
