Pakistan Kisan Movement (PKM) has welcomed the recent announcement of the government to increase the import duty on sugar and slashing export duty on sugar to Afghanistan. Pakistan Kisan Movement Secretary General Hanif Gujjar while addressing a meeting of the members of PKM said this announcement had been welcomed by the farming community.
He said since his assuming the office of Interim Prime Minister of Pakistan Mohammedmian Soomro had adopted the pro-farming community policies, a spokesman of the association said.
He said under Mohammedmian Soomro things have started moving in the right direction and that not only agro based industries would come out of crisis and contribute to the economic development of the country but the farmers would also greatly benefit from the positive policies. A large number of farmers present in the meeting chanted slogans in favour of the Interim Prime Minister for his pro-farmers policies.
Secretary General PKM took serious notice of alleged Highway and Motorway Police atrocities against the farming community. He said Highway and Motorway Police fleece the farmers of their income while transporting sugarcane, cotton and other goods on trolleys and tractors to the market and sugar mills.
