Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) members have continued protest against the emergency and the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) in their hunger strike camp. All office bearers and several senior bar members also sat in the camp. Political workers and human rights activists also visited the camp and expressed solidarity with the lawyers' community.
In his speech to people gathered there, association President Ehsan Bohn said lawyers always fought for the rule of law, the Constitution and the judiciary independence and hence they would never appear before judges who had taken oath under the PCO. He said governments always tried to undermine the judiciary since an independent judiciary never served their purposes. "An independent judiciary is needed for the unity and prosperity of the country and a peaceful atmosphere in the country," he added.
The Save Judiciary Committee (SJC) has also held a camp in the association's premises. Convenor Abdur Rashid Qureshi announced to continue with the camp unless the government reinstated Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and his colleagues.
