Drug and Cure section of UNO will establish a "Drug Cure Centre" at District Jail Lahore for the early rehabilitation of addict convicts and under trial prisoners. Inspector General of Prisons Punjab, Captain Sarfaraz Ahmad Mufti (retd) told APP here on Friday that this centre would be set up in one month under rehabilitation programme of UNO.
All addict under trial inmates and convicts will be provided complete treatment under this centre. He said UNODC will provide a team of doctors, medicines and paramedics free of cost to all addicts. He said that under this programme, all addicts in addition to treatment will also be educated besides imparting the training of different trades and skills so that after the complete rehabilitation they could lead respectable life in the society.
IG said that UNODC will also provide financial assistance to all such convicts for starting small scale business after their release and loan granted on easy terms and condition will be recovered in easy instalments.
Sarfaraz Ahmad Mufti said that Superintendent District Jail Lahore Chaudhry Naveed Ashraf had already visited Iran along with 13 members Pak-Afghan delegation for one week and studied drug rehabilitation programme inside and outside prisons including the working of NGOs engaged in the same task.
Naveed Ashraf who represented the Punjab Government when contacted told APP that nearly 400 addicts were housed in the jail, who will be treated under this programme. He said spade work had already been completed to ensure the early establishment of centre.
