Soft red winter wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade were mixed at midday on Friday in volatile trade, with nearby, old-crop contracts gaining sharply against deferred, new-crop contracts on spreads, traders said.
The front months were choppy, rallying on technical momentum and tight world supplies. Values turned lower at times, pressured by Egypt cancelling a tender and strength in the US dollar.
As of 11:55 am CST (1755 GMT), most-active March wheat was up 7-1/2 cents at $9.61 per bushel. New-crop July was down 15-1/2 cents at $7.92. The spot December contract expired quietly at noon CST (1800 GMT) at $9.39, up 5 cents on the day.
