Science & Technology, third prize stories

1998

Physicist Vincent Vuillemin applies his training as a Buddhist monk to evaluating research philosophies. In the particle accelerator, a 27km-long tunnel, 150 meters under the earth, scientists at the CERN Institute near Geneva in Switzerland make subatomic particles collide at speeds of up to 300,000km per second - as part of their research into the material make-up of the universe.
