Goods stuck at ports: KCCI seeks demurrage relief

The senior vice-president, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh, has urged authorities of the Karachi Port and the Port Qasim not to charge demurrage on imported goods stuck up at both the ports during last five days due to disturbances in the city following the assassination of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto on last Thursday.
He said huge consignments of imported as well as goods meant for export stuck up at both the ports and due to law and order situation in the city they cannot be cleared.
The KCCI leader said on last Thursday after assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto at Rawalpindi the life in the whole country paralysed, which could not be normalised till Monday. Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh said under the prevailing circumstances the importers as well as exporters failed to get their goods cleared by custom authorities.
