Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Tuesday rejected any delay in Pakistan's January 8 elections, accusing President Pervez Musharraf's allies of trying to buy time to rig the polls. The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) demanded that the vote be held on time after the country's election commission said that doing so was "impossible".
Officials said privately the vote would take place in February. "The postponement in the elections is an excuse to buy time for former General Musharraf's cohorts to come up with means to rig polls to turn the results in their favour," a party statement said. It said the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, had hit "rock bottom" in the wake of Benazir's assassination.
"Delaying polls is just an excuse for the caretaker regime to buy time to invent other means to send the PML-Q back to power. We will not accept that," party spokeswoman Sherry Rehman said in the statement. "When the party that has lost its leader and is in mourning itself is demanding that the polls be held on time, then what business does the regime have to delay polls?"
