Frost attack on sugarcane crops

05 Jan, 2008

The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) spokesman has warned that the recent frost attack on cane crops has reduced sugar contents in the sugarcane.
His comment came after a meeting between the association chairman and sugarcane growers in Layyah and Bhakhar, in which the latter complained that not only the sugar industry had witnessed a reduction in sugar contents but farmers also witnessed that cane started losing weight, because of the frost attack.
The spokesman said the association chairman had advised farmers in Layyah and Bhakhar to start irrigating their fields to save their sugarcane, warning that their crops could experience a frost bite and get fermented, causing sugar millers and growers to suffer. The association chairman also advised farmers to irrigate their fields whenever they experienced the frost attack.
