There is a strong demand from the civil society organisations in Bangladesh that the present caretaker government should start trying criminals who participated in atrocities against the innocent civil population during 1971 turmoil in the former East Pakistan.
Global human rights watchdog, the Amnesty International (AI) is backing this move. The Secretary General of AI, Irene Khan, a Bangladeshi citizen, said we want that the present government should initiate the process that to be taken forward by the future democratic government.
Although, a number of prominent Bangladeshi citizens think that the trials would be confined to only those Bengali-speaking citizens who worked against Bengalis aspirations.
However, it is speculated that quite a good number of points would be viewed against Pakistan and its army might get aired during hearings and public trial.
Replying to a question about the prospects of continuing good bilateral relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh, wife of a noted social personality said that the process would simply strain the relationship between the two countries.
A retired public service officer, who worked as information advisor to a former president, commented that my questionnaire was just a waste of time. He considers that the trial would be confined to only those Bangladeshi citizens who had committed atrocities on Bengali speaking population and in general there is no resentment for what happened with rest of the masses who were not Bengali speaking.
However, a senior university professor was sympathised with Business Recorder that a large number of so called Urdu-speaking or a part of population other than Bengalis had also suffered during the period.
Meanwhile, a report published in a local daily 'The Star' said that former freedom fighters of Patuakhali and Barisal had prepared a list of Razakars, who volunteered to get aligned themselves with the Pakistan Army during the freedom movement against Pakistan in the year 1971 and labelled them as traitors.
Time is a great healer however, decades have been passed after the historical genocide of 1971 that had killed millions of people, but the Bengalis, known as "Brave Bangladeshi" are unable to heal the past even after public-regrets expressed by the President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf.
