The leader of the opposition in Senate of Pakistan, and Deputy Secretary of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Mian Raza Rabbani has condemned 'house arrest' of Justice Rana Bhagwandas from last two days. In a statement on Monday, he said the state of lawlessness in society could be judged from the fact that judges of the superior courts continue to be detained.
The regime is living under false pretension if it feels that by detaining judges, lawyers, political workers and members of civil society, it can stain the movement for an independent judiciary, he said.
Under the constitution, Raza Rabbani stated, the judiciary is one of the pillars of the state and its independence has been guaranteed therein. The judiciary can only emerge as an independent entity when it restored to the position prior to the 3rd of November 2007. "Our struggle for an independent judiciary as it stood on the November 3rd, 2007 will continue and I assure the lawyers community of continue support in and outside parliament," he added.
