Pakistan Manpower Institute (PMI) has organised a two-day seminar on "Socio-economic development and labour migration" here on Tuesday. The main objective was to provide a forum to the participants to discuss the issues and measures relating to migration from different angles.
Labour and Manpower Division Join Secretary (HRD) A. R. Abid, who was the chief guest, highlighted the efforts of the Ministry and said it had taken a number of initiatives to promote vocational education in the country.
He further said that vocational training was now considered as investment in human capital. Its importance became more significant, especially when it was devoted to the issues relating to the planning of human resources.
During the recent past, training had assumed a special significance for the development of societies, he added.
A. R. Abid said that twin resources of a nation were its material and manpower resources, adding the welfare of the nations rested upon their effective use. He appreciated the efforts of PMI and said that it had provided this forum to deliberate upon different aspects of emigration, make practical and meaningful recommendations for proper management of emigration.
The recommendations of the deliberations would be of great use in making policies and programmes for promotion of overseas employment on sustainable basis and for solution to the problems of migrant workers, he added.
Twenty-five participants from Federal and provisional government organisations, academic institutions and executives from private sector are participating in the event. PMI Director General Mazhar Hussain also briefed the participants about PMI achievements and plans.
