Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and her two sons were temporarily released from jail on Saturday to attend the funeral service of her mother, an official said. Zia's mother Tyeba Majumdar, 87, died in the northern district town of Dinajpur on Thursday night after a heart attack, officials said.
Her body was flown to Zia's residence in the capital Dhaka for the funeral service. "The authorities have released Khaleda Zia and her two sons on parole for several hours to attend the funeral service of her mother," home ministry spokesman Shahnur Mia said.
All three, being held on charges of corruption, would be returned to jail after the end of the funeral, the spokesman added. Zia, the country's last democratically elected prime minister and the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and her two sons were arrested last year by the country's military-backed emergency government.
