The Karachi City Council in a dedicated session in Karachi on Saturday, expressing its grief over the death of Benazir Bhutto in a "terrorist" attack on December 27, 2007, paid rich tributes to the departed leader.
While condemning the Liaquat Bagh tragedy, and the countrywide incidents of violence in its aftermath, the Council also paid tributes to the victims of violence following the incident.
The City Council condolence session, held after a 42 days break here in City Council Hall, old KMC Building, also observed one-minute silence after offering 'Fateha' for the slain political leader and those who lost their lives in the post-assassination violence.
"Political differences apart, the death of Benazir Bhutto, who was a great leader and identity of Pakistan world-wide, made every eye teary... we dedicate this session to her," said the convenor City Naib Nazim Nasrin Jalil soon after she resumed the session.
Leader of the opposition, Saeed Ghani of Awam Dost panel also tabled a resolution, which condoled "martyrdom" of the first woman prime minister of the Islamic world and 30 persons in the Rawalpindi incident.
The opposition-backed resolution also called for an investigation of the incidents of December 27 and October 18 in Karachi in a way that would be acceptable to the entire nation. The resolution also conferred rich tributes on Benazir Bhutto for her "precious political efforts and sacrifices" for restoration of democracy in Pakistan, which has a long political legacy of dictatorships.
Leader of the house Mohammad Asif Siddiqui when asked by the convenor for his comments suggested that the resolution should also have mention of the horrifying aftermath of post-December 27 violence in Sindh and Karachi.
The resolution, however, could not get legal weightage as the convenor kept it confined to Fateha and a one-minute silence without presenting the document for vote of the house. The session was adjourned till 3:00 pm on January 28, 2008.
