Project launched to enhance Sahiwal cow breed

A programme has been launched to produce Sahiwal breed of cows famous for milk production. Livestock Director Dr Javed Iqbal on Monday said MU transfer technology was being utilised to promote this breed all over Punjab. "Sahiwal cow is best for dairy farming and thus it greatly benefits farmers and cattle breeders".
He said that at the research centre for Sahiwal cow procreation Kutcha Khooh calves had been obtained through this technology very successfully. He explained that four to 40 or at times even 100 calves could be obtained through this technique from just one cow.
"Normally, a cow of ordinary race can produce merely four or five calves in her life". He stated that with such projects, the country could overcome milk and meat shortage and even export those products to earn forex for the exchequer.
