The All Pakistan Textile Association (Apta) has lauded the decision by Textile Minister Alam Munoo, allowing import of Indian short staple cotton via Wagah. Association Chairman Adil Mehmood said it would help save the textile sector and boost business in the country.
"The textile spinning is a main sector of industry and admittedly a prime source of providing employment, foreign exchange always playing a vital role in the economy. But, currently the textile spinning is in a severe crisis, because of expensive business, power and gas cuts and short production of cotton," he said.
He said that import of 500,000 short staple cotton bales from India should support the textile industry though his association wanted to see one million bales of importable quantity reaching the country.
