02 Feb, 2008

Caretaker Interior Minister Lieutenant General Hamid Nawaz Khan (Retd) on Friday said that the government has no information to confirm reports that a top al Qaeda operative Abu Laith Al-Libi had been killed.
Talking to media persons at National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) headquarters here, he said the place where the explosion occurred in Mir Ali had already been cleared by militants when security personnel reached there. "We cannot confirm Al-Libi's death because the militants had removed bodies from the site where the explosion happened and the security personnel did not find any corpse," he said.
To a question he said the law and order situation in Dara Adam Khel is improving with the help of local jirga. About Aitzaz Ahsan, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, the minister said that he was free now. "His detention was ordered by the provincial government and not by the federal government," he added.
Regarding security arrangements for the elections, Hamid said that government would ensure foolproof security. He said it is joint responsibility of the people and political parties to cooperate with the government for peaceful conduct of forthcoming general election.
