03 Feb, 2008

US Consul General, Ms Kay Anske has stressed need to renew public pledge for conservation of wetlands. Addressing a session at World Wildlife Fund's Wetland Centre Sandspit here on Saturday to commemorate the World Wetlands Day, she termed these as unique and threatened ecosystems.
"It is important that people renew the pledge to conserved these unique and threatened ecosystems," Ankse said. Congratulating the young participants of the art and speech competitions held to mark the day, she said that awareness about the critical issues of conservation of ecosystems is vital for survival of human kind.
The US Consul General noted that the convention on wetlands, drafted in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international co-operation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
The programme organised to highlight importance of wetlands and their conservation for world's ecological health was also attended by environmentalists, scientists and students from different schools of the city.
