PPP demands immediate release of Aitzaz

04 Feb, 2008

Strongly condemning the renewed detention of SCBA President Aitzaz Ahsan and restraining him to proceed to Nudero by Punjab Government, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has demanded his immediate release.
PPP Information Secretary Sherry Rehman in a statement issued here said that continued and renewed incarceration of Aitzaz was not only a slap on the face of a tottering and insecure regime but also a desperate attempt to silence dissent and an index of regime's open contempt for the rule of law.
She said that the regime appears to be terrified of the Supreme Court Bar Association President's lawful activities in the country. 'It therefore chased him all over Lahore as he tried to depart for Naudero to condole with the family of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,' she added.
The muzzling of the press, incarceration of deposed judges and other members of civil society, the legal community and political workers had exposed malafide intentions of the regime, she noted. Sherry Rehman demanded immediate release of Aitzaz Ahsan.
