The Deputy Inspector General of Punjab Highway Patrolling Police, Mian Muhammad Asif has said that adequate efforts are being made to streamline the traffic system for minimising the ratio of accidents on highways in the province.
Addressing the members of Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) here on Monday, Asif stressed upon the need for educating and creating awareness about traffic rules among the people.
There was no driving school of international standard in Pakistan and collective efforts were direly needed for setting up such a school to train people according to traffic rules, he added. Pakistan, he said is on eleventh number in terms of the ratio of accidents, with youngsters (15-25 year) being most of the victims.
The DIG Police further said that there was a need of preparing a comprehensive strategy for controlling the traffic upto 2020. "If timely efforts and special attention is not paid on this burning issue than every third person would be the victim of accidents in the country," Asif added. He also stressed upon the business community of Sialkot to play its instrumental role in setting up FM radio station and driving school in the area.
In his address of welcome, President SCCI, Dr Khurram Anwar Khawaja stressed the need of formulating traffic system on the pattern of Lahore and Islamabad and deployment of traffic wardens in Sialkot.
Special attention should be paid on minimising the highway robberies and protection of passengers should be ensured, Khawaja added. The President SCCI said that Highway Police Monitoring should be enhanced on Sialkot-Daska-Lahore and Sialkot-Wazirabad-Islamabad routes for ensuring smooth and hurdle-free journey.
