77-year-old Tariq gets PhD degree

Dr Munir Ahmad Tariq has obtained PhD degree in vaccinology from the Department of Microbiology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore at the age of 77 years. He completed his research work on the topic "Immunoprophylaxis of Foot and Mouth Disease in Bovine" under the supervision of Professor Dr Khushi Muhammad, Director, WTO-Quality Control, Laboratory of the UVAS.
He was pioneer, in developing technology for production of FMD vaccine. Dr Tariq got his bachelor degree (BVSc) in 1953 from this institute (then the College of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Lahore) and MSc in microbiology, from the West Pakistan Agriculture University in 1969. He worked as demonstrator at the College of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Lahore and Veterinary Research Institute Quetta. He resigned from government service in 1981 and established his own vaccine production unit (Avicenna Laboratory).
He is pioneer in isolating Mycoplasma Capri from lungs of frank cases of contagious, caprine pleuro pneumonia (CCPP) from Balochistan. During his PhD programme, he donated Rs 150,000 to improve research laboratories in department of microbiology and some of the funding was used to improve cell culture laboratory for research work.
