There should be a plan to include the reuse of major sources of municipal and industrial wastewater for the development of limited potential water sources. The Sindh Minister for Environment and Alternate Energy Department, Jam Karam Ali said this while addressing a seminar on water quality monitoring programme in Sindh held on Saturday.
The moot was organised under the auspices of the Sindh Environment and Alternative Energy Department. The Minister was of the view that the plan for reusing of major sources of municipal and industrial wastewater will help decreasing the pollution load on the water bodies.
He pointed out that considering the existing poor quality of water in Sindh, it is necessary to identify the sources of pollution within the province and that which is coming from adjoining provinces.
Ali said the Environment and Alternate Energy Department should work effectively for co-ordination and implementing actions to control this pollution.
He further stated the federal and the provincial governments would be sensitised about this serious issue and would be stimulated to help providing treatment of sewerage and industrial effluent.
The Minister also pointed out that we are living in a world that is rapidly exhausting its limited water resources which is a serious issue, not only threatening the bio-diversity but also has an impact on the human health and lives.
Ali said important development in agricultural production over the past decades had led to wide range of pollution problems including increased sedimentation from erosion, animal waste, salination and water logging. Also other issues like contamination generated from industrial activities have polluted the water bodies, he added.
The Minister said further that after implementation of sub-projects in The Sindh through the National Drainage Programme, it is expected that beneficial environmental impact would come along as drains mitigated the harmful effect of water logging, salinity and water contamination.
The Secretary of the Department, Mir Hussain Ali, presented the welcome note while the Director, Sindh Environment Protection Agency, SM Yahya, offered the vote of thanks to the participants.
