Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam leader Pervaiz Elahi on Thursday said his party and allies have elected Pervez Musharraf as president for five years and hoped the latter would remain the head of the state for his term.
The former chief minister told a news conference, after a parliamentary party meeting at the Muslim League House here that his party was happy with its performance and wanted other parties to serve the country. "The PML-Q will sit on the opposition benches and play the role of opposition. We will play a positive role to solve the national issues," he said.
He talked up his party's victory, saying his party legislators were elected from all the four provinces. "The PML-Q will continue serving the public whole-heartedly and will be strengthened in days to come," he said. "We will monitor the performance of the new government on a daily basis and remind them of promises they have made to the people of Pakistan. We will also remind them of their movement for the restoration of judges," he added.
He also said his party would let the public know of reforms undertaken by his government and compare its performance with that of the new one. "We will work with new vigour to strengthen the party at the grassroots. We will see the show of the new government," he added.
When asked about the possibility of overtaking the Muslim League House by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, he said, "Our policy is not to create irritants but whoever tries to create problems for us they should be ready to face the consequences."
In his speech earlier to ticket holders for the Punjab Assembly seats, he said his party would never compromise on principles and continue its agenda. He also discussed the post-poll situation and told participants to serve the public. Party leaders Mohammad Basharat Raja, Arshad Lodhi, Chaudhry Zaheeruddin and Kamil Ali Agha were also present.
