The black gram production is expected to touch the figure of 900 million kg as the crop has been sown on exact time and rains too remained excellent for its better production. It will be a bumper production and growers will be able to export the crop, besides meeting domestic needs, the Federal Food Committee (FFC) meeting was told.
The total yearly black gram consumption of the country is 500 million kg, thus there will be 400 million kg in surplus which can be exported. "In order to provide better price to the farmers for their crop the surplus quantity should be exported," said Qaisar Nawaz Gandapur, a 'dal' merchant.
He said that using certified the seeds, employing latest technology and developing proper storage in public as well as in private sectors could enhance the production of black gram. The gram is the main pulse of the country, constituting almost 70 percent of its total pulse requirement. Karachi, Khund Khot, Payzo, Hyderabad, Mankara, Noorpur Thal and Fatehpur are its main growing areas.
