02 Mar, 2008

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is pursuing a plan to work with the industrial sector for enhancing the power of national research base and assisting educational institutions in identifying and fostering excellence, an HEC official said on Saturday.
The official said that plan focuses on developing a research sector that is dynamic and has the capacity to respond flexibility to a changing research environment. He said the key feature of the plan is its dynamism, openness and ability to bring change and promote new trends and developments in various disciplines and in the research environment.
It would also help ensure continuous development of the physical infrastructure in the field of learning and teaching to make it fully fit for delivering excellent provision, he said. The official said researchers would be provided with awards so as to encourage excellence in all modes besides promoting the professional development of teaching faculty.
He said the plan would also help encourage effective collaboration and provide capacity for developing and extending research capability in new areas of research. There is a need of dramatic increase in the research activity as well as the establishment of a research culture in the educational institutions, he said and added HEC is extending required support to drive up quality in learning and teaching to support, promote and reward excellent practice.
HEC is making efforts to improve the standard of teaching and learning as a key element in the higher education because the institutions are facing challenges to meet the changing needs of learners and society, he said.
