Serbian Jelena Jankovic said Monday she aims to become the world's top-ranked player and will focus only on big tournaments this year. "Achieving the number one ranking is my dream. I grew up thinking about that. I am working hard to achieve it. If I win a Grand Slam, it will take me closer to the top spot," said the 23-year-old, currently ranked fourth.
"I played a lot of tournaments last year and won a lot, but this season I am going to concentrate only on bigger tournaments." The Serbian, who is seeded top at the 600,000-dollar WTA Bangalore Open, was one of the top performers on the Tour last year, winning 72 matches and four titles.
"I had a great season last year. It was a learning experience. I am working a lot and hoping for much better results this year," said Jankovic, an Australian Open semi-finalist this year.
The Serbian, who reached a career-high of number three last year, said she hoped to win a medal at the Beijing Olympics. "Olympics is always special and you will be surrounded by the best athletes. I hope I can bag a medal this year. I want to give my country something," said Jankovic, who is yet to win a Grand Slam.
The Serbian is expected to face a stiff challenge from the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, who are seeded second and third respectively at India's richest tennis tournament. "I have beaten both of them," said Jankovic. Jankovic and the Williams sisters have first-round byes here.
