IN SHORT: Singapore launches wireless broadband access for ships

10 Mar, 2008

Singapore has become the first country to launch a cutting-edge system allowing wireless internet access to personnel aboard ships that are up to 15 kilometres off the coastline, maritime officials said on Friday.
With the pioneering technology called "Wiseport," personnel on vessels travelling within the zone are able to update their shipboard software and download the latest navigational charters to facilitate their voyages.
It enables sailors to enjoy benefits such as the phone service Skype, hold video conferences and check their e-mail messages without having to dock at port, said Simon Ang, the authority's manager of planning and communications.
