No rift in PPP ranks over Prime Minister slot: Sherry

11 Mar, 2008

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has said that it would announce its candidate for the office of the prime minister after the elections of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. Talking to media here on Monday, PPP Information Secretary Sherry Rehman ruled out any rift in the ranks of the party over the nomination of party's candidate for the prime minister's slot.
She said that Makhdoom Amin Fahim is a respectable leader and he may call on party's Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari whenever he wants. To a question, Sherry said that a senior leader of the party was given the task to extend invitation to Makhdoon Amin Fahim for his participation in the meeting of PML(N) chief Nawaz Sharif and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari at Murree, but the invitation could not be delivered to him due to reasons unknown.
Sherry dispelled the impression that any rift exists in the party. About the party's candidate for the office of the prime minister, she said the consultation process in this regard are in progress and three to four names are under consideration. She said that Asif Ali Zardari would announce one name after the National Assembly session and election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker would also be made.
The PPP leader said the newly elected members of the National Assembly are meeting party Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari in this regard, adding that most of the members are of the view that the decision of the co-chairman would be acceptable to them.
