World Kidney Day observed in Multan

14 Mar, 2008

World Kidney Day was observed in Multan on Thursday with seminars and rallies organised by Doctors' society, PMA, and NGOs throughout the city. According to experts most kidney patients suffer from infections like stones in and out of kidneys, acute renal failure and chronic renal failure.
The ratio of male and female patients is almost equal and they come from Azad Kashmir, NWFP, Balochistan and Sindh. Dr Ijaz Malik said women, who are prone to recurrent kidney infections, should take fluid at least three litres a day besides regular emptying of bladder, good hygiene, and control of diabetes and cranberry juice may be effective.
Professor Dr Laeeq Siddiqui, Principal Nishtar Medical College said predisposing factors for renal stones are low urine volume, high protein intake, high sodium diet and low calcium diet. He said causes of renal failure are heart failure, blood of fluid loss, stones, tumours and prostates enlargement.
According to study chronic kidney failure is caused by 5 percent congenital diseases, 5 percent renal artery stenosis, 5 to 25 percent high blood pressure, 20 to 40 percent diabetes, systemic inflammatory diseases and 5 to 20 percent causes are unknown.
To prevent these diseases one should go for routine check-up yearly, control blood pressure and diabetes and regular antenatal check-up as many patients came for dialysis after severe bleeding before and after delivery. If fluid loss is more in vomiting or diarrhoea it can lead to renal failure so one should immediately start fluid replacement when symptoms appear.
