An Anti-Terrorism Court on Saturday handed over to police, for questioning till March 27, a suspect of twin suicide bombing in the rally of Benazir Bhutto. Qari Saifullah Akhtar, the suspect, was produced in the court under tight security after he was brought to Karachi from Lahore by plane.
The investigation officer told the court that the police wanted to interrogate the Qari in the case of Benazir's procession attack case. The officer also presented the last book of Benazir Bhutto in the court in which she had mentioned that Qari Saifullah had hatched a conspiracy to overthrow her government in 1995.
Qari Saifullah had been extradited by the United Arab Emirates in August 2004 and was languishing in Karachi Central Jail. He was freed months ago after pressure from the Supreme Court, according to his lawyer Hashmat Habib.
The Qari was re-arrested in Lahore last month. His name surfaced in 1995 for the first time when a group of army men was arrested for conspiring to assassinate Benazir. He was arrested in connection with the plot and had been in prison for some time.
