THE RUPEE: dollar rises on interbank market

05 Apr, 2008

The rupee extended its overnight losses on the interbank market on Friday, falling six paisa for buying and selling at 62.86 and 62.88, dealers said.
The rupee lost its firmness due to strong demand for dollars. It is expected that the rupee may show mixed trend in terms of the US currency, experts said.
In the Asian trade, dollar crept up against yen on Friday on investors optimism that financial markets may be regaining stability, offsetting worries somewhat about the US economy before a key payrolls report due later in the day.
The Australian dollar fell against the US currency and yen after retail sales data showed an unexpected drop and comments by Australia's central bank governor reinforced a market belief that interest rates may have peaked.
The rupee followed the same print, rising five paisa for buying and selling at Rs 98.45 and 99.05, they added.
