Pakistan Medical Association (PMA-Karachi) has condemned the alleged abduction of Associate Professor of General Surgery, Dow University of Health Sciences, Dr Asim Jafery, from outside the gates of Lyari General Hospital, who was later released in the evening allegedly against a ransom of Rs 500,000.
General Secretary of PMA Karachi, Dr Samrina Hashmi here on Sunday said the doctors' community is extremely concerned about their own safety and that of their colleagues and calls upon the government to take strong steps to stop lawlessness in the City of Karachi. "Doctors are of unanimous opinion that it has become very difficult to work with a peaceful mind and concentration in this situation," she said.
Dr Samrina observed that the country was already facing a massive brain drain of doctors from the country due to economic difficulties and if this situation is further enhanced by lawlessness and lack of security, then how could the government expect doctors to work with the needed peace of mind.
The PMA, she said calls for immediate arrest of the culprits and provision of security to doctors. PMA-Karachi was also said to evolve a line of action in close co-ordination with the doctors association of Lyari General Hospital and Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre respectively on Monday.
