Two-day workshop on 'Risk and Safety Management in Process Industry' commenced here at Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) on Tuesday with an aim to enhance the awareness among engineers about process of safety, risk analysis and management techniques.
The course will help engineers to adopt a practical solving approach in their respective professional areas. It will also provide them the knowledge, tools, skills and exposure for sustainable operating in industry safety and minimising risks. During the first day of the workshop, the scholars thoroughly deliberated upon benefits of safety/risk management in the process industry and hazard identification techniques. They also made detailed presentations about design of process equipment for inherent safety.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the workshop, Secretary Pakistan Engineering Council, Major General Mehboob-ul-Muzaffar (Retd) said that PEC had made a comprehensive programme for professional development of engineers, which he added at present was going through legislation and would be effective shortly.
He said safety in industry, especially in process industry was vital adding that even understanding of potential risks was imperative in daily life. "The growing awareness in the world due to electronic media and legislation has made it essential for industry and its employees to have a proper risk management programme," he remarked. The process of safety and risk analysis has widened significantly in the past decade and historic operating information and better understanding has led to safer design and operations.
Mehboob-ul-Muzaffar said these days it was a requirement that the level of safety in terms of operators, equipment, community and the environment was certified. It may be recalled that PEC has been regularly arranging such workshops to keep the engineers informed about the rapidly changing trends in the engineering field. Before the ongoing workshop, it has arranged 15 short courses on different topics.
