'Government fails to arrest culprits of May 12 incidents'

10 May, 2008

Human Rights Activist Hina Jilani has said the safety of citizens is the responsibility of the state. But the government is unable to arrest those responsible for the May 12 incidents in Karachi on the day of deposed chief justice address to the Karachi Bar in which 50 innocent people were killed. She demanded an independent inquiry.
She told a press conference on the launching of the book on incidents of May 12 in Karachi, organised by the Women's Action Forum on Friday that the book reveals the stories of 28 people killed in the incidents. It also reveals the feelings of their relatives including their parents, brothers and sisters. She claimed that the government of that time was responsible of that incident.
She criticised the state policies and said that these policies were giving birth to such religious and political groups who were involved in terrorist activities for their own political and religious motives. She said that it is the right of the citizens to live their lives according to their religious and political beliefs. She also criticised some political leaders who said that don't discuss the incident in which innocent people lost their lives.
While answering the question she said tolerance and reconciliation without truth is not possible and without it nation will suffer and "there is no limit of truth." She also appreciated the role of media and said that media reported the whole incident and for this, they had to face difficulties. She said on May 12 offices of AAJ TV were attacked by terrorists and there was continuous firing for eight hours on its office.
