The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre Washington, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai has appreciated Prime Minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani's stand on Kashmir. Gilani in his first interview on CNN-IBN had stated that Kashmir was the core issue between Pakistan and India, and it must be resolved according to the United Nations Security Council resolutions keeping in view the aspirations of the people of the occupied territory, KMS reported.
Dr Fai said that these three points represented parameters that were defined by the United Nations Security Council in its resolution that was adopted on April 21, 1948. "UN resolutions could not be, morally or legally, overlooked by either country and the UN mandate guarantees the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir," he added.
Dr Fai opined that the only serious factor obstructing the healthy development of India-Pakistan relations was the dispute over Kashmir. He pointed out that the two countries had fought two wars over the territory and during the Kargil crisis, they were at the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. The Executive Director emphasised that no resolution of Kashmir was possible without ascertaining the will of the people of occupied Kashmir.
