Fishermen demand resolution of problems

14 May, 2008

Local Fishermen on Tuesday demanded of the government to resolve their outstanding problems immediately, saying that authorities should set forth a compact fisheries policy. "There is no such policy, at least on the ground," representatives of fishermen organisation said, criticising that government officials are reluctant to negotiate with them and failed to sort out unattended issues.
They further demanded that a ban should be imposed on use of small nets and trawlers' deep sea fishing. Fresh seafood exporters accused the officials of Marine Fisheries Department (MFD) for creating bureaucratic hurdles. They said that department officials demand bribe for the release of the commodity to Dubai, other UAE countries and Saudi Arabia.
