US to provide financial aid for judicial reforms

United States would provide financial assistance for implementation of judicial reforms being conceived by Pakistan's ministry of law and justice, US ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson said on Friday. The ambassador called on minister for law and justice Farooq H. Naek and discussed various issues of mutual concern particularly terrorism and strategy to curb it.
Meanwhile, Naek also apprised her of the reforms to be introduced to improve the judicial system, said a statement issued here. Ambassador showed interest in evening courts and public defender offices while she also enquired about the working of family courts. The minister explained that family courts are intended to give relief to women and decide cases quickly.
She was pleased to know that amendments made to ensure 20 percent quota of females for jobs in the judiciary. The issue of detainees also came under discussion and the minister asserted that the government is committed that all detainees should be dealt in accordance with the law and nobody should be deprived of life and property except as provided under the law.
