Nomination papers: election tribunal issues notices to Nawaz Sharif, others

27 May, 2008

An election tribunal of Lahore High Court (LHC) while admitting an election petition challenging acceptance of PML-N chief, Mian Nawaz Shairf, nomination papers for contesting by-election from NA-52 Rawalpindi, has issued notices to respondents for May 28, 2008.
The petition was filed by a PML-Q candidate from NA-52, Raja Nasir Muhammad. The petitioner has stated that the Returning Officer had rejected his valid objections raised on the nomination papers of Nawaz Sharif.
Meanwhile, another tribunal adjourned hearing in some other election petitions against the acceptance of Mian Nawaz Sharif's nomination papers.
The petitioners said the accountability court had declared Nawaz Sharif disqualified for 21 years from seeking or being elected, chosen, appointed as member or representative of any public office or any authority of the Local Government of Pakistan. The appellants said Sharif had been convicted by competent courts and the convictions were still intact because these were not set aside by any court till date. The appellants said Sharif was also a defaulter of banks consortium.
