IMF appoints chief economist

The International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday that Olivier Blanchard would become its chief economist as of September 1, replacing Simon Johnson, who announced his resignation this month. Blanchard is an economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The IMF said on May 5 that Johnson had resigned after 14 months on the job to return to MIT, from where he is on leave.
