Partly Facetious: there's a difference between official residence and home

04 Jun, 2008

"Our home must be considered our sanctuary and no one must be allowed to violate it."
"I agree but you know there is a difference between a house and a home."
"What is the difference?"
"A home is what we make of it and a house is merely the physical structure."
"So it is not related to ownership?"
"Ah, you are being sneaky, aren't you? I guess we have to insert the element of ownership. If it's an official residence then we are, legally and morally, only allowed to use it till the time we hold the office to which the house is attached. So even if it feels like home we have to leave a house once we no longer hold the office."
"So where does the Nepalese King stand in all this? His family has been living in the palace for donkey's centuries, not even years, and now the parliament wants him to vacate it and go to live in his own house, one that he owns."
"Sad that! It's never easy to be fired."
"Nope, it isn't easy even if it's your own fault that you got fired."
"Right we have people here in this country occupying houses that are attached to offices they no longer hold."
"Yes I heard. When Musharraf had all the power he wanted the deposed judges to vacate their official residences and the judges wouldn't do that."
"Ah yes, but what about the house that Musharraf is occupying?"
"Well, the way he probably justifies is that he is entitled to one government house and he has given up the fancier President's House to keep the Army House."
"One can't argue with that logic."
"But then there is a new army chief and surely he is entitled to the Army House."
"He is but he is the only one who doesn't really seem to care if he gets it or not."
"Whatever do you mean?"
"All Musharraf's opponents and that includes almost 99 percent of the people in this country want him to vacate and..."
"Ah yes, but he will vacate as soon as the people tell him to vacate it. Isn't that what he always says?"
"Don't be facetious."
"I wonder what will convince him to go out of the house and out of our lives?"
"At this point in time no one but God!"
"Feet first, hunh!"
