Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif held a meeting here on Tuesday and discussed overall political situation, functioning of the coalition government at the centre and Punjab and law and order situation in the province.
The meeting lasted over an hour at the State Guest House, where Shahbaz Sharif called on the Prime Minister. This was the first meeting between the two leaders after Shahbaz became Chief Minister of the province. The Prime Minister extended his warm felicitations to Shahbaz Sharif on assuming the charge of Chief Minister.
The Prime Minister told Shahbaz Sharif that his election was a victory of democratic forces and vindication of the aspirations of the people of Punjab who have reposed their full trust in his leadership.
The Prime Minister also congratulated the Chief Minister on the presentation of Punjab budget in the Assembly, which focused on poverty alleviation and providing relief and welfare services. Shahbaz informed the Prime Minister that the coalition government has taken off to a good start and is functioning smoothly.
He said he has taken several measurers to bring about improvement in the law and order situation in the province and accelerate the pace of economic development with a view to bringing about the much needed improvement in the quality of life of people of Punjab.
He said he has also set up price control committees at the district levels in the province to check prices of essential goods and ensure their smooth supply to the people. The Prime Minister appreciated the various steps being taken by the Punjab Government and said Shahbaz Sharif will have the full backing and cooperation of the federal government.
