LHC upholds election tribunal's decision

18 Jun, 2008

A full bench of Lahore High Court (LHC) has upheld a decision by the Election Tribunal confirming the disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)'s candidate Intisar Hussain Bhatti contesting by-election from PP-107 in Hafizabad.
The bench comprised of Justices, Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi, Hasnat Ahmad Khan and MA Zafar. Intisar had challenged the decision by an appellate election tribunal. It said the petitioner was involved in using unfair means and to contest the election the person had to be honest.
His counsel, Kazim Khan, said the returning officer had allowed his client to contest the by-poll, but an election tribunal held him ineligible despite the fact he was cleared of charges. Meanwhile, an election tribunal has issued a notice to PML-Q MPA, Saeed Akbar Niwani, for July 3 on an appeal against his election. Appellant Abbas Cheena claimed that Niwani had contested the election on a fake bachelor's degree and that he was involved in murder cases.
