About 85.6 percent cotton sowing completed

Cotton crop has been sown over 2,739,000 hectares land so far to achieve the cultivation target of 3,200,000 hectares in the current season. Official sources in the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) told APP here on Wednesday that 3,200,000 hectares land had been set to produce about 14,110,000 bales of cotton during the season.
Cotton sowing is still continuing across the country and will remain in progress in the next month also to cover the remaining gap of the crop cultivation. Giving province-wise crop overview, they said that cotton crop has been sown over 89 percent area in Punjab province as the crop has been sown on 2,240,000 hectares against the set target of 2,520,000 hectares.
They said that in Sindh 79.2 percent area has been covered as the crop has been sown over 499,000 hectares against the set target of 630,000 hectares. They said that 10,000 hectares and 40,000 hectares land is also targeted in NWFP and Balochistan provinces, respectively.
The officials said that Punjab has been given the target to produce 11,000,000 cotton bales, while Sindh and NWFP will produce about 3,000,000 and 10,000 cotton bales, respectively. They said that Balochistan will produce about 100,000 bales cotton for the year 2008-09.
